Which of your characters do you most hate and why?
I guess that would have to be Hovar in "Map of Power". I know he's not as overtly bad as Piper who manipulates everybody, but he allows the manipulation and doesn't think things through when he should. Piper is brutal because he inhabits a brutal world, and he just happens to be more accomplished at being brutal than everyone else around him. Hovar should know better, he's got history and education on his side and he sells out. He's a compromised coward, whereas Piper is only a bastard. Piper also has the bonus of being vital and intense, Hovar is scared of anything different.
In "Sea as Mirror" I tried to dislike Joe, but I couldn't really. He isn't bad, he's just a foolish young guy who wants a good time and doesn't want to take any sort of responsibility. I'd probably dislike him a lot more in twenty years time if he stayed that way! I guess the other obvious choice in that book is Old Man Riley. He does play a pivotal role, after all, in the devastation that is Elizabeth's life. However, I can't bring myself to hate him and I think it's because he's more of an archetype than a character, more like a force of nature than a human being.
