Oscars goss

(Close your eyes if you're yet to watch your tape of the Oscars...)

Lord of the Rings scooped (hooray!) 4 Academy Awards including Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Make-Up and Best Original Score. Sadly it didn't get Best Film (that would have been too much to hope for!) and (amazing IMNSHO) also missed on Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay). Not to worry, however! At the end of the night LOTR was tied with A Beautiful Mind with 4 Oscars each. Not a bad evening's work all told!

Poor Harry Potter drew a complete blank, meanwhile. It was up for Art Direction; Costume Design and Music (Score).

For all of the Oscars goss head to: Oscars.com; Entertainment Weekly; E Online and The New York Times Online (or any other entertainment website for that matter!)

(You may now open your eyes again, btw!)

Jackson the Jedi

Samuel L. Jackson has been talking to SCI FI Wire about his lightsaber fighting style in Attack of the Clones. It combines kendo with fencing and street fighting. Jackson reprises his role of Mace Windu in Episode Two.

Two Towers trailer spoilers

Harry Knowles the Ain't It Cool News guy has been at it again. This time he's seen the trailer for The Two Towers early... But - his warning, not mine - his review is spoiler heavy so you might like to hold off on reading it. I'm going to wait and see it on the big screen, but it's your call.

Still MORE Blade

Blade II is yet to open here in Australia (doesn't hit our screens until July) but early indications for a third Blade movie are good.

From Comics Continuum:

"It's on. It's on," [Wesley Snips] said on Friday during an appearance on CBS The Early Show. "The response for Blade II has been so great, and the movie's not even out yet. But everybody's talking about doing it. Three's a charm."

David Goyer (writer of the first two) is also on board for a trilogy...

ET re-opens Thursday

And a quick reminder that ET re-opens on Thursday... Well worth a re-visit on the big screen (or a first visit on the big screen for young'uns such as myself!)

Lord of the Rings - new footage

Meisha found this at Hoyts.com.au:

For all Lord of the Rings lovers we have some good news. Roadshow Film Distributors will be releasing a new end spool into cinemas which contains an extra 4 minutes of footage from the next film in the trilogy (The Two Towers - due out this Christmas)

The extra footage will be attached to the end of Lord of the Rings from Friday, March 29 so Australian audiences will see it before the rest of the world.

Fab!

Liath, with the humble help of Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly Online, reports the following:

Aragorn the Priest?

March 14 - According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen is in negotiations to star in director Neil Jordan's historical biopic Borgia. The heir of Isildur is set to play Cesare Borgia, "a hypocritical priest who plunders the nation to further his family's power". Based on the crime family that inspired Mario Puzo's The Godfather, the film tells the sordid tale of the corrupt family in 15th Century Italy. For all those fans out there who just couldn't get enough Viggo viewing in LotR, check out A Perfect Murder, Albino Alligator and 28 Days.

Ringing in your Ears

As the Oscars come speeding around the corner, Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring is prepared. Heading into the night with the most nominations of any film this year, The Fellowship of the Ring continues its media assault on multiple fronts - from Academy voters to average filmgoers (who have plunked down $710 million worldwide so far).

Along the lines of epic ambitions, New Line is extending its "Rings" campaign with plans for not one but two DVD packages for FotR. According to Jackson, the theatrical version hits stores in August (America), while a multidisc director's cut with 30 minutes extra film and new music from composer Howard Shore. Extra scenes include Hobbit tunes, the back-story of mystery man Aragorn, and an extended gift-giving scene of Galadriel. Jackson explained, "In the movie, Galadriel is this frightening oracle. This is her in a more gentle mode".

There will soon be yet another tempting reason to see FotR again; a three and a half minute trailer for December's 's The Two Towers at the end of the movie. Australian viewers should head out to see FotR one last time between the end of March and beginning of April, for an enticing look at the next instalment of the saga.

(ok - so I just told you this but Meisha and Liath were both so lovely as to tell me twice that they deserve to be up in lights!)

Cloning the Ice Age

This just in from Fox:

Twentieth Century Fox Films officially announced that for a limited time, the latest trailer for

** STAR WARS: EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES **

can be seen in cinemas exclusively from Thursday March 21 preceding the new animated spectacle ICE AGE.

The trailer entitled CLONE WAR starts to look at the story and the state of the galaxy, setting the stage for what's about to happen and how the characters are involved. We find out that the Republic is on the brink of war, and the Jedi are overburdened in trying to hold everything together.

ICE AGE is the smart, character-based comedy and all-digital animated feature film from Twentieth Century Fox Animation and Academy Award winning director Chris Wedge.

Set in the prehistoric world ICE AGE tells the story the planet's majestic creatures migrating south to avoid really bad frostbite. With the exception of three slothful creatures - a woolly mammoth named Manfred, a terminally lazy sloth named Sid, and a saber-toothed tiger named Diego!

[PH8: I was fortunate enough to see Ice Age over the weekend - a really cute film! Smart, funny, great animation - who could ask for anything more? HarperCollins, incidentally, publishes the tie-in books for kids - click here for full details. (You know I had to! It's in my job spec and everything... kind of!)]

ICE AGE opened on Friday March 15, at the Number One position on the US box office to the stellar gross figure of US $47,850,000.

Cinema goers in Australia can enjoy ICE AGE as of Thursday March 21 and also get to see the STAR WARS: EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES trailer on the big screen.

STAR WARS: EPISODE II THE ATTACK OF THE CLONES will open in cinemas on May 16, 2002.

Check out the official websites for Ice Age and Star Wars.

Orlando the bushranger

Our feisty little elf is heading back in time. To 19th century Australia to be precise. He's set to play Joe Byme (that's Ned Kelly's best friend) in Our Sunshine beside Heath Ledger and Mick Jagger. More info at Annanova and UpcomingMovies.com.

Harry reviews Clones

Harry Knowles (The Ain't It Cool guy) has seen an early cut of Attack of the Clones. I'm trying not to find too many spoilers for this one so I haven't read the review (so basically you follow the link and read at your own risk!) but you'll find it here in all its glory!

Spider Man 2

Spider Man is yet to open (opens in Australia in June) but Sci-Fi Wire reports that Spider Man 2 is already in the works with Tobey Maguire set to reprise his role. For the latest in Spider Man news keep an eye on the official website.

Enterprise crew on Enterprise

Genuine Enterprise crew members (U.S.S. - the Navy aircraft carrier, rather than the starship) will feature in an upcoming episode of Enterprise. Cool. Full details at Sci-Fi Wire and on the official site

11th March, 2002

Ok... so I lied last week - sorry about that! What can I say? Life made other plans for my working days!!!

New Star Wars trailer - coming any second now

The new Star Wars Episode II trailer is due to go live on StarWars.com at 9PM US time on the 10th... No sign of it just yet (11.13 am AEST, Monday 11th March, 2002) If my maths was up to it I'd convert that for you. Soon, though. It will be there soon. The trailer is 2 and a half minutes long and "culminates with glimpses of some of the largest action sequences ever found in a Star Wars movie". Very cool indeed.

Death Race 3000

Just in from SciFiWire: Tom Cruise is going back behind the wheel in Death Race 3000. He plays Frankenstein - the best driver in the world, but one with a reputation for recklessness and erm... crashes. (No, you're not the only one thinking Days of Thunder!) No idea when it's coming but it sounds spiffy: "[The cars] can fire missiles, become invisible, split and then re-form. It's a real high-tech adventure. ... One of the best scenes is a car breaking the sound barrier with a sonic blast on a river of ... ice. The ice begins to crack and shatter. It will be amazing." (Director Paul W.S. Anderson in conversation with Chicago Sun-Times columnist Cindy Pearlman)

Red Dwarf: The Movie

Rob Grant and Doug Naylor (along with the usual cast of suspects from the cult TV show) have teamed up to create Red Dwarf: The Movie. The basic premise is essentially the same as the show - a cooky gang out in space. Lots of pre-production action back 6 months or so and, if the schedule is being followed it should be filming now (in time for a late 2002/early 2003 release), but not a lot of news on the website (so that's not as encouraging as it could be). Definitely something to look forward to, though. Take a stroll around RedDwarf.co.uk - it's a nice place to waste some time.

UpcomingMovies.com report that Jackie Chan and Madonna have been rumoured in the past to have cameos in the film. Could be interesting. Could be very interesting!

Our Hugh back as Wolverine

Hugh Jackman on UrbanCinefile: " ...now I feel confident I know what Wolverine is about. I’ve got to start eating tuna and bulking up, which is a bit of a pain, but apart from that I’m really looking forward to it."

X2 is due for release in the US May, 2003. LOTS of info on the project at Upcomingmovies.com.

4th March, 2002

I'll update and do a proper news and goss soon (tomorrow maybe, even!) but in the meantime:

Buffy on TONIGHT in Sydney

Nuff said. Check your local guides, order in your schnacks, set your VCR and snuggle up with your remote. Tonight on 7 at 10.30 in Sydney...

Photos from the Sydney Phantophiles gathering are up...

Click here to view them. Sydney Phantophiles - I'd love some more blurb about the evening so if anyone is bored/brave/generally wants to volunteer to write a spiel I'd love to add it :)

That's it from me for today. Lunch calls :)
