Jack Dann nominated for Hugo!

Voyager's Jack Dann has been nominated for best novella for The Diamond Pit in the 2002 Hugo Awards. The Diamond Pit is featured in the recent release Jubilee.

The awards are to be announced at ConJose - the 60th World Science Fiction Convention - which takes place 29 August to 2 September. Full list of nominees are up at Locus Online.

Congratulations and good luck, Jack!

I want to be a Stormtrooper!

Looking for a way to while away the hours between now and the release of Attack of the Clones? Have we got the website for you! http://www.studiocreations.com/stormtrooper/main.shtml teaches you how to build a complete set of Stormtrooper armour from the ground up.

Time on Attack of the Clones

Time magazine gives us "An inside look at the new "Star Wars" episode: how the young Darth Vader fell in love and George Lucas rediscovered the heart and soul of his epic series" here.

Same old, same old - I don't know if there are spoilers (I'm trying to avoid too much detail), so read at your own risk!

More about the Rings

"What the films have done is taken the deep essences of the books and made them work and kept true to them, at the same time being true to the film process" - Bernard Hill (King Theoden in The Two Towers and The Return of the King) on The Lord of the Rings films. Read on at Sci-Fi Wire.

The Scorpian King

Are you a fan of The Rock? You may not be after you see The Scorpian King if AICN's Quint is to be believed. He sums the film up as "mediocre"…

AotC on sale TOMORROW!

This just in:

Advance tickets for Attack of the Clones go on sale Thursday, April 18th (that's tomorrow, friends!), at Greater Union in Australia. Check out http://www.theforce.net/episode2/index.html#15572 for more tickets gossip.

Australian Sci-Fi

I also received this press release this morning:

Sci-Fi fans,

The Australian sci-fi film festival blasted off today, charting a course where no one has gone before. Proudly sponsored by TV1, Sci-Fi 2002 will orbit Sydney’s Dendy Opera Quays from May 9-15 2002. The Festival then changes course and diverts to Melbourne’s Kino Cinemas June 13th -19th for another week long voyage around the art of sci-fi cinema. Premieres, recent hits, old favourites, discussion forums and a short film competition make up the program which has the whole galaxy talking...

The Sydney program features some fabulous sci-fi films (as you would hope!) including Metropolis, Dark City, The Matrix and (a personal favourite) Muppets in Space...

Full Sydney details at the festival website at http://www.australianscifi.com/ (looks like Melbourne is yet to be "locked off")

16th April, 2002

Congrats to our Kiwis!

Alma Hromic reports that:

"Changer of Days, along with Counterpart and First Hunter, has been nominated for the Sir Julius Vogel award in New Zealand (to be awarded at the Wellington National SF convention, Con With The WInd, this year in May)"

Speaking of Con With The Wind - Dale Elvy will be heading back to NZ for the event:

"I will be attending 'Con with the Wind' the 23rd New Zealand national science fiction convention from 31 May to 3 June this year. I will be speaking about my expreiences in writing as well as promoting the second book in my Spirit Shinto trilogy "Spirit City." "

Star Wars rules the world

Or at the very least the Voyager news and goss! Up this week is the news that Hayden Christensen is not looking forward to seeing his face plastered all over Pepsi. That his image is going to be used on every imaginable spin-off can't have come as a surprise, however! In other news (same source - Ananova - but different news) apparently our little Anakin had trouble keeping his pants on. Or at least on in one piece...

GEEK ALERT! You can download countdown clocks for Attack of the Clones, The Two Towers and Spiderman from ClockDown.com

Still no sign of tickets but if you see 'em I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT!

StarWars.com reports that the final VFX shot has been locked off...

The charity premiere in New York will benefit the Children's Aid Society... Prices are $500US for the pre-party and screening or $1000US for the pre-party, screening and VIP seating. Read on at StarWars.com

Eowyn no sleeping beauty

Miranda Otto on Eowyn:

"She's not some wimpy kind of Sleeping Beauty character, but someone with a bit of guts.
"She falls in love, but her love is unrequited, and she dresses up as a man, goes to war and kills the king of the witches."

- From Ananova

Aaliyah removed from Matrix

Aaliyah, who was killed in a plane crash last year, has been replaced in the upcoming Matrix films by Nona Gaye according to Ananova. Meanwhile Moviehole reports that Blue Heelers star Rupert Reid has also joined the cast.

Spider-man gets ****

While you're at Moviehole take the opportunity to read their review of Spider-man. Paul Fischer reports that "the casting for this is perfect"... Moriarty from Ain't It Cool is equally enthusiastic, btw.

Head over to Sci-Fi Wire to read about Tobey and Kirsten's upside down kiss.

Lotsa Star Wars stuff

Attack of the Clones is supposed to be better than The Phantom Menace... then again, it would want to be - even Ewan McGregor has fessed up that it was boring, annoying and commercialised... Ok, so the words HE used were "flat" and "disappointing" but I'm sure we all know what he MEANT! The good news is that Ep II is "more reminiscent of the original three Star Wars films"... Read on at Ananova

They've already started queuing in the US, meanwhile. About half a dozen rabid fans plan to spend the next six weeks outside the Chinese Theatre. As well as drumming up publicity for the film they'll be raising funds for the Starlight Foundation... Check it out at Sci-Fi Wire

Want a sneak peek at Ep II? Head over to EW.com for exclusive photos, interviews and gossip...

Samuel Jackson has been giving spoilers about the fate of the Jedi in Episode III... Canoe.ca have the full story. Speaking of Episode III - want to see Obi Wan? Harry the Ain't-It-Cool guy has somehow found this pic of Ewan in make-up.

I've also received a special request to let you all know that Nine will be screening all three original movies from this Sunday night at 8.30 (in Sydney anyway! check your local guides). The Phantom Menace was last night...

Just a reminder: Atack of the Clones hits our screens on the 16th of May. No sign of tix going on sale yet in Sydney but I'll keep my eyes and ears open...

Harry is kids' choice...

Ananova tells me that Harry Potter (and Britney Spears but the less said about that the better!) is up for Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice award in the US.

Kirsten on Spider Man

Kirsten Dunst, who plays Mary Jane in the upcoming Spider Man has been chatting to EW.com. The 19 year old reports that being on the set was "More like play than work, really, but also a little too much male energy". Spider Man opens on the 6th of June.

LOTR on DVD

Are you doubtful as to whether LOTR is a worthy purchase on DVD? Head over to Aint-It-Cool and let Moriarty lay all your fears to rest! Sounds cool. VERY cool. And yep it's been confirmed that Howard Shore really HAS composed additional music for the extended version on DVD. I'll add a language warning for this particular article but that's a risk you often take at Ain't-It-Cool!

Blade II

Want to know more about Blade II? ETOnline has a feature on the flick. According to ET Blade II has a much more "European" feel to it than the original.
