First week on the charts
Posted: 6 August 2004
In The Earth Abides The Flame reached #4 on Dymocks Scifi bestseller list in it's first week of release. I'm very happy with this -- thanks to all who've bought a copy.

In The Earth Abides The Flame released in Australia
Posted: 29 July 2004
The release date for In The Earth Abides The Flame, 28 July 2004, has passed. The book should now be available in Australian bookshops.

I'm very pleased with this book. It's faster paced than the first volume, and we see a lot of character development. Leith, in particular, is faced with new challenges.

I was fortunate to work with three wonderful editors. Davina MacLeod did a thorough and comprehensive initial edit (but will be horrified by the number of times I ignored her advice -- sorry Davina). The manuscript then went to HarperCollins, where Stephanie Smith made invaluable comments, before being sent to Annabel Bley for a copy edit. I'd like to thank all three people for their contribution to this process.

A number of people have found small mistakes in the first volume, Across The Face Of The World. I'd be delighted if people who find errors in either volume contacted me. Even if it's a missing full stop. These errors occur for a variety of reasons, and not the fault of the editors! I'll reply to each one of you.

Second Book Arrives! and other news
Posted: 13 July 2004
Sorry for the long gap between updates, but I've been up to my eyeballs in work. Just arrived, however, is an advance copy of the second book in the trilogy: In The Earth Abides The Flame. I'm delighted by the cover and the treatment; it looks lovely. Skimmed through it and found no obvious errors. Lots of maps, though.

From what I understand, it will be available in Australia at the end of July/beginning of August. New Zealanders will have to wait until September. The mass-market paperback of Across the Face of the World will be issued at the same time as the Trade Paperback of the new book.

Some other interesting news: Across the Face of the World has been sold into the Czech Republic and Korea. Two interesting countries... I can't wait to see the covers!

Russell Invades Australia
Posted: 17 April 2004
My son and I are coming to Australia next week (18th - 28th April), partly as a holiday, but mostly to attend Conflux (the National Science Fiction Convention) and meet many people I've corresponded with for years but never seen in the flesh. I will make some media appearances (see below) and will attend Conflux during Anzac weekend.

Conflux 2004
Posted: 17 April 2004
I am going to be attending Conflux, the Australian National Science Fiction convention, in Canberra from April 23 to 26. I will be appearing on a number of panels, doing a couple of readings and making a presentation about building fantasy worlds. Most importantly, however, I will be meeting people. Come along if you can -- day registrations are available at the venue. Check out http://www.conflux.org.au/.

Book still selling well...
Posted: 24 March 2004
Across the Face of the World continues to sell well. After four weeks at #1 of Dymocks' SFF list, it's snuggled down nicely at #3.

Local Bookshop Goes Mad!
Posted: 18 February 2004
My local Hamilton bookshop has put up a large display in their window to coincide with the publishing of Across the Face of the World in New Zealand. Will I admit to wandering around local bookshops to see how the book is being presented? No, I don't think I will.

Across the Face of the World continues to hold down the top spot on Dymocks' Scifi/Fantasy bestsellers list. It even made a brief appearance on their top ten general fiction list last week. Thanks again to all of you who've taken a chance on it. A special thanks to those who have sent me feedback.

News Flash!
Posted: 6 February 2004
Across the Face of the World was number one on Dymocks' Fantasy and Scifi best-seller list for the fortnight ending 31 January. This is especially gratifying given the official publication date was 1 February.

News Update
Posted: 2 February 2004

Across the Face of the World now available in Australia

February 1st, the official publication date for Across the Face of the World, has now passed. I am reliably informed that some bookshops have set up promotional displays to accompany the release.

Angus & Robertson, Canberra

I’m very pleased by the way the book has been received thus far. Apart from some negative reaction to the blurb on the front cover, people have been unanimously positive about the book itself. Across the Face of the World will be published in New Zealand on February 20th.

New Zealand Book Launch

HarperCollins New Zealand, in association with Pennys Bookshop, have organised a New Zealand launch for Across the Face of the World. This will take place on Monday March 1st at 7pm, and will be held at the Waikato Academy of Performing Arts in Knighton Road, Hamilton.

Waikato Academy of Performing Arts

All are welcome and there is no charge. The event will be fully catered and will wind up about 9pm.

Keynote Speaker at Map Conference

I have been invited to give the keynote address at the 2004 New Zealand Map Society/Australian Map Circle Joint Conference, to be held at the University of Waikato between February 8th and 11th. I intend to give my Conflux 2004 paper an early airing, and will talk about the construction of imaginary landscapes.

New Zealand publishing date confirmed
Posted: 16 January 2004
Across the Face of the World will be published in New Zealand on 20 February 2004 in Trade Paperback format. The RRP has been set at $31.99. Publicity for the book is scheduled to begin in March.

I'm looking forward to seeing it on the shelves. Or, hopefully, disappearing from the shelves!

Edit of Book 2 progressing well
Posted: 9 January 2004
I'm hard at work on the edit of Book 2 in the Fire of Heaven trilogy, tentatively titled In the Earth Abides the Flame. I know it's a long title, but it fits with the titles of the other books. It is, in fact, the second line of a couplet of some importance to the story... The publishing date for this remains August this year in Trade Paperback, though all times are subject to change.

There is little major rewriting to do. I have to tidy up a couple of chapters, the feel of which need to change in light of the other books. Otherwise, my main task is to check consistencies. It really did pay to make all those lists of times, tides, dates, places, seasons and so on while I wrote.

And I'm looking forward to the publishing date of Across the Face of the World, which is a mere three weeks away. I was never this excited when my atlases came out!
